There are a few reasons why one might need a hip replacement. the most common is Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Avascular Necrosis, and injury/fracture.
Most often, the surgeon will recommend one to see a physiotherapist both before and after surgery. This is to allow the person in need of a hip replacement to get their hip into the best shape possible to minimize surgical complications, heal well and heal quickly. Prior to surgery, the focus is often on making sure there is as much functional strength and range of motion as possible so that less is lost in the healing process. After surgery, the focus shifts to regaining the strength/range of motion one had, improving it, managing swelling, gait retraining, and pain management.
Below are some commonly used resources to refer to. However, be sure to consult with your family doctor, surgeon, or physiotherapist to make sure you are clear on what exercises are good for your individual situation and that they are completed safely.
